The 12 Houses

The house of the self — your body, personality, appearance, and the lens through which you see the world. It sets the tone of the entire chart. The Ascendant (Lagna) falls here and is the single most important point in Vedic astrology.

Kendra (angular) + Trikona (trine) — doubly powerful. Planets here are prominent in the native's life.

The house of accumulated wealth, speech, family of origin, food, and early education. It governs how you earn, save, and speak. A strong 2nd house indicates financial stability and a pleasant, persuasive voice.

Maraka (death-inflicting) house — its lord can end life periods. Also critical for financial longevity.

The house of courage, communication, short travel, siblings (especially younger), and efforts. It governs your initiative, skills, and your relationship with the people in your immediate environment.

Upachaya (growing) house — malefics strengthen here over time. Also 3rd from Ascendant governs self-made effort.

The house of home, mother, emotional security, real estate, vehicles, and inner happiness. It represents your roots, heritage, and the foundation you stand on. Peace of mind is literally the domain of the 4th house.

Kendra (angular) — a pillar house. Afflictions here disturb domestic happiness and the relationship with mother.

The house of creativity, intelligence, children, romance, past-life merit (purva punya), and speculation. It is a naturally joyful house — where the soul expresses itself freely. Mantra, devotion, and higher learning are also found here.

Trikona (trine) — highly auspicious. One of the dharma houses (1–5–9 axis). Strong planets here confer blessings.

The house of daily work, health, enemies, debts, obstacles, and service. It is a house of struggle that builds character. Overcoming the challenges of the 6th house leads to mastery and healing abilities.

Dusthana (difficult) but Upachaya (growing) — suffering that strengthens. Malefics placed here often protect.

The house of partnerships — marriage, business partners, and all one-to-one relationships. It also governs travel abroad and open enemies. The 7th house is the mirror of the self, showing what you seek and attract in the other.

Kendra (angular) + Maraka — powerful and potentially dangerous. The spouse's qualities are read directly from here.

The house of death, transformation, hidden matters, inheritance, occult knowledge, and sudden events. It is the most feared house but also the most profound — the gateway to deep healing, research, and spiritual liberation (moksha).

Dusthana (difficult) + Moksha — feared but spiritually vital. Strong 8th planets can give longevity and occult gifts.

The house of higher wisdom, fortune, father, religion, long travel, and dharma (life purpose). It is the most auspicious house in the chart — the house of grace. A strong 9th is the single most reliable indicator of a fortunate, blessed life.

Trikona (trine) + Dharma house — the most benefic in the chart. Its lord is a natural benefic for any Ascendant.

The house of career, public reputation, status, authority, and your role in society. It is the most visible house — what the world sees you as. Father's status, government dealings, and your contributions to society are all 10th house matters.

Kendra (angular) — the most active, public house. The midheaven of the chart. Planets here give fame and profession.

The house of income, fulfilment of desires, social networks, elder siblings, and friends. It is the house where effort (3rd) translates into reward. Upachaya in nature — it grows and improves with time and effort.

Upachaya (growing) + Labha (gain) — malefics here grow stronger with time. One of the best houses for wealth.

The house of loss, expenditure, foreign residence, isolation, sleep, and spiritual liberation (moksha). What leaves the chart through the 12th can be surrendered or lost — but also transcended. It is the gateway to other worlds and to the dissolution of the ego.

Dusthana (difficult) + Moksha house — its challenges, when surrendered, become spiritual gifts. The 12th closes the chart.
